SMEC HISTORY

SAN MIGUEL ESKRIMA CLUB got its name after St Michael the Archangel who is popularly known as the warrior of GOD. Described as carrying a mighty sword in his right hand, he led the soldiers of GOD in the war against the Evil powers. Thus its name San Miguel Eskrima for Fraternity - Unity - Peace! These ideas were the great motivator of Grandmaster Filemon "Momoy" Cañete, who strived that every SMEC member should know by heart.

With the strong determination to preserve the art and the assistance of the two great friends and Eskrimadors, namely Dr. Eduardo L. Tojong and Engr. Julito Cuizon, SMEC Lapulapu Chapter was conceived. In 1989, they held their first induction ceremony. The officers were: Dr. Eduardo Tojong - President, Edring Casio - Vice President, Fidelita Tojong - Secretary, Gemarie Villariasa - Asst. Secretary, Boy Atil - Treasurer, Thodoro Tojong - Auditor, Fred Villariasa and Edgar Casio as Public Relations Officers.

The following years brought SMEC-LC some glorious moments. The Lapulapu City Government sought the expertise in several re-enactments of the BATTLE OF MACTAN. They tapped the group's skills and talents because the group has the capacity to demonstrate realistically the historic battle using these indigenous martial arts. Many accolades have been awarded to the club but despite the fame, they do not intend to wave their flag around.

Students were taught with strict discipline, right values and systematic recognition. Several students have already made their name in International tournaments producing world champions and attracting foreign students. At his small gym, you can observe that discipline and respect is a way of life for every practitioner.

Today listening to him about his life as a martial artist can make you realize that Edring has lived up to the dreams and aspirations of the Great Grandmaster and the Teacher of teachers - Momoy Cañete.
